Welcome to Awesome World: The Brett Turcotte Story

by Matt Brooks
Jul 8, 2011 at 0:16

I have heard Brett Turcotte described as the gnarliest rider you have never heard of, which is likely true unless you ride a snowmobile. Like many of the top athletes out there Brett has made a cross over from another sport, but instead of having a BMX or Moto Cross background Brett comes from the less common sport of sledding. Turcotte's history includes many highlights such as video segments with the likes of the Slednecks crew and even a silver medal at the X Games in snow cross.

That silver metal finish also landed him a spot on the Jason Ellis radio show where he was inducted into Awesome World...hence the song choice for this segment. All of these past experiences have clearly added up and worked to Brett's advantage when it comes to his mountain biking. He has picked up the sport with ease in the short 4 years he has been riding, and is already doing tricks normally reserved for top pros.

We shot Brett's section over the course of two days, and I would say he managed to pack a lot of great riding into that time. The odds were clearly stacked against us as well. Not only did the weather not want to cooperate, but Brett's bikes were also taking a beating and simply could not take what he was dishing out. While up in the hills Brett sucked his derailleur into his spokes ripping it into several pieces and dismantling several spokes from his wheel. Most riders would have thrown in the towel at this point, but not Brett. Instead he decided to drive the bottom of the hill and start knocking on doors asking for a hacksaw so he could cut his chain off and continue the shoot chainless. After some unprofessional yet successful bike mechanic work we had a semi operational bike, which was good enough for Brett. With a tire rubbing against his frame and a plastic bag wedged in his cranks to keep them from spinning we headed back up. Clearly nothing slows this guy down! Turcotte continued to trick every feature he hit even pulling a no footed can can off a very sketchy drop, watch his section carefully and you'll notice a bunch of shots where he is riding with no derailleur or chain.

If you ask Brett about his riding he will simply tell you he is in it for the sure enjoyment of the sport. He's not looking to become a rock star, or make tons of money, but rather just enjoys the challenge riding brings and the fact that people seem to enjoy watching him ride his bike. Seeing as Turcotte has a wife, 2 kids, is a professional in another sport, and has a full time job, it's amazing that he is able to find time to ride at all let alone progress the way he has. Lone Wolf Productions wishes Brett the best of luck in his mountain bike career and hopefully many of you can now refer to him as the gnarliest rider you have heard of.

Brett Turcotte ROCKS! Cool biking and great edit Matt! Most people don't know that Brett jumps 200 footers on his sled doing can's etc. and won a Silver medal in X-games Snow-cross. He bikes totally for the fun of it and I respect that. Awesome!

Pretty smooth but not enought smooth, his tricks on dirt jumps are very good but he should work on whips and tricks like that tabletops and other whiping hiping. For example smooth 90 degrees whip or scrub can be much more spectacular then some crazy tricks especially when some dudes are wrapping whip like snake or something then it looks awesome.

Jorden125 do you have neurosis? Take it easy Razz
I didn't said that his skills are bad because he is very good rider with talent and for sure he can eat us on breakfast.
Just more whiping hiping on some big jumps because dirt jumps are everywhere but the best big awesome jumps are only in Kamloops and I wish to watch mor of this.

Pretty sure they used the same exact chords Pink Floyd used for I Wish You Were Here. This song is almost insulting to to them! It's like it's a parody cover or something...Great riding and awesome video. I may be wrong but aren't there copyright laws against copying music? Listen to Floyd and tell me that the guitar part isn't exactly the same...Unless they gave them credit for using their tabs..

sure, he has the largest radio show in the world, often tied with Howard Stern. Ellis has many "bits" he does on the show 2 of which being Awesome World, and Death! Death! Die! Awesome world is for people who have done awesome things in their lives. Death! Death! Die! is Ellis' band which is supposed to be a parody band. It's a raunchy joke band. Since Brett has been inducted into Awesome World by Ellis we got permission to use the Death! Death! Die! song Awesome World. If the song sounds similar to Pink Floyd, I'm sure they have covered their butts as far as copy write laws go. If you ever want a good laugh listen into his show on Sirius radio channel 41.
