I have heard Brett Turcotte described as the gnarliest rider you have never heard of, which is likely true unless you ride a snowmobile. Like many of the top athletes out there Brett has made a cross over from another sport, but instead of having a BMX or Moto Cross background Brett comes from the less common sport of sledding. Turcotte's history includes many highlights such as video segments with the likes of the Slednecks crew and even a silver medal at the X Games in snow cross.
That silver metal finish also landed him a spot on the Jason Ellis radio show where he was inducted into Awesome World...hence the song choice for this segment. All of these past experiences have clearly added up and worked to Brett's advantage when it comes to his mountain biking. He has picked up the sport with ease in the short 4 years he has been riding, and is already doing tricks normally reserved for top pros.
We shot Brett's section over the course of two days, and I would say he managed to pack a lot of great riding into that time. The odds were clearly stacked against us as well. Not only did the weather not want to cooperate, but Brett's bikes were also taking a beating and simply could not take what he was dishing out. While up in the hills Brett sucked his derailleur into his spokes ripping it into several pieces and dismantling several spokes from his wheel. Most riders would have thrown in the towel at this point, but not Brett. Instead he decided to drive the bottom of the hill and start knocking on doors asking for a hacksaw so he could cut his chain off and continue the shoot chainless. After some unprofessional yet successful bike mechanic work we had a semi operational bike, which was good enough for Brett. With a tire rubbing against his frame and a plastic bag wedged in his cranks to keep them from spinning we headed back up. Clearly nothing slows this guy down! Turcotte continued to trick every feature he hit even pulling a no footed can can off a very sketchy drop, watch his section carefully and you'll notice a bunch of shots where he is riding with no derailleur or chain.
If you ask Brett about his riding he will simply tell you he is in it for the sure enjoyment of the sport. He's not looking to become a rock star, or make tons of money, but rather just enjoys the challenge riding brings and the fact that people seem to enjoy watching him ride his bike. Seeing as Turcotte has a wife, 2 kids, is a professional in another sport, and has a full time job, it's amazing that he is able to find time to ride at all let alone progress the way he has. Lone Wolf Productions wishes Brett the best of luck in his mountain bike career and hopefully many of you can now refer to him as the gnarliest rider you
have heard of.
